Back to Movies Home Last year's film diary

Been watching things slowly. Not logging or remembering most things. Here's what's stuck from the last couple months.

Angst (1983) dir. Gerald Kargl

This movie had some of the best cinematography I've ever experienced in any film. Insane home-invasion serial-killer horror. What a rough watch. Truly incredible. Gaspar Noe's favorite movie. That freak.

American Mary (2012) dir. Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska

I'm an IDIOT for sleeping on this movie for so long IT WAS SO FUCKING GOOD. The fashion alone makes it worthwhile but this was some really top-tier body horror. Thank you Canada for all you give us.

I've not been logging my movies this year. I also never got around to styling last year's page. We'll see if I can muster up anything beyond plain text sometime this rotation.

I've been passively consuming a lot of exploitation/shock films recently. I keep them on in the background for ambience.

I have, however, sat down and actually watched a few things this year that made an impact and I will share them here.

Dogville (2003) dir. Lars Von Trier

A week ruiner. A preferred genre for me. Loved the spare, abstracted set and production. The journey from curious uncertainty to hard-won-hope to utter depravity. An exploration of some of the nastier aspects of human nature, and the idea that some people may be beyond redemption, and that the world might just be a better place without some people in it. Bleak stuff, but it's cathartic for me to see these ideas expressed in these extremes and stripped down to their bare essentials. I think my favorite of the Von Trier films.

Tenebrae (1982) dir. Dario Argento

Technically a rewatch but I'd forgotten it all and wow was that sure a ride. Insanely cool freaky stuff. Utterly banging score by some members of Goblin. I feel like this is a perfect movie to have on like at a party. As long as your friends are cool with blood and tits and stuff. Lots of hilarious moments and jaw-dropping and candy-colored kills.

Nekromantik (1988) dir. Jorg Buttgereit

Okay well that was the nastiest movie I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of shit. The corpse threesome was gross for sure but nowhere near the most gag-inducing part. Saw it on a bootleg which gave it an exra-grimy quality. Nobody normal should ever watch this movie. Freaks only. I'm glad I saw it. It was goofy and funny at times but truly too gross for me to even convey. Also there's some real animal cruelty so beware if you manage to get your hands on this rotten disgusting film.
